Abstract

Learning Outcomes

This case can be used to teach students the complexities of implementing digital transformation in small-to-medium financial institutions, particularly SACCOs. Upon completion of the case discussion, students will be able to understand the role of technology in enhancing operational efficiency and financial inclusion; evaluate project and change management practices during digital system rollouts; assess the impact of leadership in navigating digital transitions; and analyze financial performance indicators such as revenue growth, membership expansion, and return on member deposits. Additionally, students will reflect on how digital platforms like CoopMis can promote financial equity and strategic growth in underserved communities.

Case Synopsis

This case study focuses on Mzima Spring (NWDT) SACCO Limited’s digital transformation journey through the implementation of the CoopMis system. The SACCO, initially reliant on manual operations, faced growing demands for more efficient and accessible services as its membership base expanded. To modernize its operations, SACCO leadership, including Chairman Fredrick Opiyo, Vice Chair Christine Owande, and CEO Justin Ndetei, made the strategic decision to implement CoopMis.

The case explores the challenges and successes encountered during the system’s implementation, including delays in launching mobile banking services and the importance of member feedback. By October 7, 2024, the system went live, allowing members to access key services such as account statements and loan applications via the SACCO's website.

The SACCO leadership eagerly awaited the results of a post-launch satisfaction survey to assess member feedback and further refine the system. The case concludes with reflections from Fredrick, Justin, and Christine on how this feedback will shape the next phase of Mzima Spring’s digital evolution.

The case highlights key themes such as digital transformation in financial cooperatives, the role of leadership in managing change, and the importance of listening to member feedback for continuous improvement. In the follow-up to this case, we will explore the survey results and how Mzima Spring SACCO adjusts its strategy to better meet member needs and fully integrate the CoopMis system.

Complexity/ Academic level

This case is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in finance, business management, and information systems. It is designed for use in courses such as digital transformation, project management, strategic leadership, and financial services innovation. The case encourages students to engage with real-world challenges faced by financial cooperatives during technological adoption and provides a platform for applying theoretical concepts to practical scenarios. It is particularly appropriate for students at the advanced undergraduate level and for MBA or master's students exploring the intersection of technology, leadership, and financial inclusion in emerging markets.
