Abstract
Learning Outcomes
This case can be used to teach students the strategic application of digital innovation in healthcare education, particularly the integration of simulation laboratories and virtual campuses in medical training institutions. Upon completion of the case discussion, students will be able to assess the challenges facing healthcare training in low-resource settings, evaluate the benefits and limitations of simulation-based learning, and understand how digital tools can enhance clinical competence and patient safety. Students will also analyse the regulatory and policy frameworks influencing medical training in Kenya and develop strategic implementation plans for scaling simulation labs across institutions. Additionally, the case fosters critical thinking on how digital education models can complement traditional pedagogies to improve training outcomes in healthcare.
Case Synopsis
This case study explores the challenges faced by the Kenya Medical Training College in providing sufficient clinical placement sites, infrastructure, and meeting regulatory requirements of student-lecturer ratios. It also proposes the integration of virtual campuses and simulation laboratories as a solution to overcome the challenges identified. The case study follows the fictitious managerial staff of a medical training college as they implement this solution and the challenges they face. The theoretical framework used is the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), which focuses on the adoption and use of technology. This case study provides insights into the challenges faced by medical training colleges in Kenya and offers practical solutions for improving healthcare education.
Complexity/ Academic level
This case is suitable for undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in healthcare education, health systems management, and educational technology. It is designed for use in health professions education programs, as well as in MBA and master’s programs in healthcare management, health policy, and innovation in education. The case is particularly relevant for students exploring the intersection of digital transformation and medical training, and it provides an opportunity to apply theoretical frameworks to real-world challenges in educational reform, technology adoption, and institutional capacity building in emerging markets.
