Abstract
Learning Outcomes
This case study explores the challenges of sustaining a social enterprise while balancing financial stability and social impact. It aims to help students understand how to develop effective fundraising strategies for mission-driven projects. Students will analyze approaches to financial sustainability, including grant writing, marketing strategies, and scaling operations. They will evaluate the role of stakeholder management and community engagement in supporting disadvantaged women through vocational training. Additionally, the case highlights the importance of people and culture management in ensuring participant retention and long-term success.
Case overview
Sister Maria Namono is in the training room with Sister Caroline Nasio and they are trying to make plans as concerns the Twezimbe Centre Uniforms. It is a centre that makes schools uniforms for schools of Njeru in Buikwe District and they empower disadvantaged women to become self-sufficient by getting training. Sister Maria stated “Look, we need to think of ways as to how to raise funds to keep this uniform project on course,” She further elaborated “we need to think through on how to get funding to buy more machines and materials for the tailoring and hairdressing training, we need to think of how we shall grow and be self-sustaining and if we are successful, and with better marketing strategies we can get to scale this unform project to other locations in the next few years.” Sister Caroline nodded in agreement and exclaimed “and the financial situation will not get better with some of the women seeming to be drop out before completing the training due to their inability to pay the 5000UG (3 USD) that they are now required to pay per month as their contribution for the training, it is urgent that we start writing fund proposals to get a grant.” Sister Maria then stated “Let us meet tomorrow afternoon and include Sisters Angela and Sister Rosemary Oduol (Assistant Congregation Leader) in a zoom meeting so that we can brainstorm on the options open to us with regards funding and marketing for this project.” They then agreed to hold the brainstorming meeting at 3 p.m. the next day.
