Learning Outcomes
This case explores the leadership challenges within the medical insurance industry. Students will analyze strategic leadership decisions, including how to manage and restructure a struggling division, restore profitability, and handle crisis situations. The case also highlights the impact of pricing strategies and financial mismanagement in the health insurance sector, as well as the consequences of ineffective leadership transitions. Ultimately, students will learn how to balance short-term crisis resolution with long-term strategic growth and sustainability in a competitive and high-pressure environment.
Case Synopsis
In January 2009, James Wambugu was appointed CEO of UAP Insurance Kenya, taking over from James Muguiyi, who shifted focus to expanding UAP’s presence in other African markets. Around the same time, Dr. Mebinda was promoted to head the Medical Business Division (MBD), a critical unit of UAP Insurance. What initially seemed like a routine transition soon turned into a major management challenge for Wambugu.
Faced with intensifying competition, Dr. Mebinda implemented discounted pricing strategies to retain customers. However, rising healthcare costs and unsustainable pricing led to financial losses, culminating in his resignation in August 2010. This presented Wambugu with an opportunity to appoint a new leader who could stabilize and grow the division.
As Wambugu contemplated the ideal candidate, a crisis erupted—on November 10, 2010, the CEO of a major hospital called to warn that MBD’s account would be suspended due to unpaid bills, jeopardizing healthcare services for policyholders. Now, Wambugu faced urgent decisions: How could he prevent service disruptions, restore MBD’s profitability, and ensure that the UAP Board approved his leadership choice?
