Case Synopsis

The mistrust between Kenya and Tanzania dates back to the 1960s, driven by their contrasting economic systems—capitalism in Kenya and socialism in Tanzania. By the late 1970s, tensions flared, with leaders from both countries making derogatory remarks about each other's economies. Despite these challenges, Mr. Bharat, CEO of Scangroup, expanded the company into Tanzania in the 1990s through a joint venture, reducing its Kenyan identity. This move paved the way for further regional growth, including Uganda. By the mid-2000s, Scangroup had become a key player in East Africa’s media sector. Following a successful IPO in 2006, Bharat contemplated expanding Scangroup’s reach to West Africa, leveraging the company’s newfound regional strength and experience.
