Learning Outcomes

This case can be used to teach students the strategic complexities of evaluating competing growth opportunities in both domestic and international markets. Upon completion of the case discussion, learners will be able to analyse alternative growth strategies using comparative frameworks such as SWOT, CAGE, and the Ansoff Matrix; assess the risks and rewards associated with market deepening and international expansion; and evaluate the financial, operational, and organisational implications of each strategic option. Students will also examine the trade-offs between regional market leadership and international market entry, brand development in familiar markets versus rapid expansion into new ones, and short-term profitability versus long-term strategic positioning.

Complexity Statement /Academic level

This case is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in business, strategy, and agribusiness, particularly those enrolled in MBA or master’s programmes in Strategic Management, International Business, Agribusiness, and Agricultural or Trade Policy. It is designed for courses in growth strategy, international market entry, risk-return analysis, and cross-cultural management. The case is also suitable for executive education and corporate leadership programmes focused on strategic decision-making in complex and uncertain environments.

Case Synopsis

This case study presents a strategic inflection point for Githunguri Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society (GDFCS), one of Kenya's largest dairy cooperatives. In 2023, while strengthening its footprint across East Africa, GDFCS received an unsolicited yet lucrative export opportunity to supply long-life milk to the Middle East. The board, led by Chairman Mr. Kinyanjui, weighed two distinct growth trajectories - regional consolidation versus international expansion, each with unique risks, capabilities, and potential rewards - to make a decision on GDFCS’ future.
